Recipient of a Dissertation Year Fellowship

The University Graduate School at Florida International University has awarded me a Dissertation Year Fellowship (DYF), a highly competitive award that supports “highly-qualified FIU doctoral students during the data analysis and writing phase of their dissertation.” This financial support (and tuition waiver) will allow me to take a hiatus from tour guiding in 2018 so I can focus on writing my dissertation: “Transnational Racial Politics of Public Memory and Public Space in Little Havana’s Heritage District.”

In 2018, I am also taking a leave of absence from two boards I have very much enjoyed contributing to: Live Healthy Little Havana and the Koubek Center. I don’t expect to have much of a social life, either. You see, on top of finishing my dissertation, I also am also going to be producing the #AfroOchoDance project this year, since I ALSO won a Knight Arts Challenge grant. Yup, no social life for me …
