Teaching

Teaching is my passion. For the past decade, tour guiding has been my primary vehicle for teaching, but for most of my career I have also offered workshops, led trainings and facilitated dialogues and discussions.

In 2018, I am not going to be doing any teaching, as I have to focus on completing my PhD dissertation at Florida International University (FIU). From 2013 through part of 2017, I was a Teaching Assistant at FIU.

I have led workshops on a variety of topics during my career, and I also designed the curriculum piloted with after-school programs across the U.S., in low-income urban and rural settings. Called “Youth Visions for Stronger Neighborhoods,” it received very positive feedback. Unfortunately, however, the organization that hired me to write the curriculum no longer exists (Community Technology Centers’ Network).

Workshops I have led and for which I have also written original curriculum, include the following:

  • Asset-Based Community Development
  • Arts-Based Civic Engagement
  • From Storytelling to Action: Civic Engagement
  • Facilitating Community Dialogue
  • Animating Commercial Corridors with Arts
  • Economic Permaculture
  • Cultivating Great Third Places
  • Diversity in the Workplace

Some of these workshops I have led for many years, such as Arts-Based Civic Engagement, which I have taught for Broward County’s Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute annually since 2014. In 2016, I served on the (summer) faculty for the Mandela Washington Fellowship program for young African leaders.

Earlier in my career I led many workshops on Internet marketing, writing for the web and web site planning, but these topics are not among my main interests at this time.
